Re: [IPp] Sets
We have found the Skin Tac Wipes (Torbot Group, Inc.--you can get free samples
from their website) to be the BEST for our guy. They even worked when we went
swimming! Now we have to work a bit to pull the site off because they're so
sticky. You can also order a Tac Away to help unstick the site after you've
removed it. (Just be sure to use lots of lotion after you take it off and switch
to the other bum.)
Also, we found when we go to the mountains we have to increase his basal rate
by about 30%. You might just keep an eye out to see if all of the excitement
makes his blood sugars rise. Our son's almost always does. The increase of 10%,
etc. was helpful for us when doing regular traveling, since it seemed to affect
all of his blood sugars. One note: our endocrinology nurse said some kids' blood
sugars go low, so just keep an eye out for his trends. =)
Have a fun trip!

Hi All!
We are almost a month into pumping and it is going better than I ever
expected, with the exception of the first week! Our son (age 3) pumps with
the minimed from Medtronic and we use the silhouette sets, we were given a
month's supply with the purchase of the pump. Are there easier or better
sets to use? We always use emla cream first and we are currently doing only
bum area. We always put a clear tape over the infusion set but they seem to
soak off very easily in the bath. Any suggestions? Also, our family is
taking a trip to Germany over the holidays to visit with my husband's family
I am a bit nervous about such a big trip and being new pumpers - any words
of wisdom from anyone to has travelled with a young child? Any advice would
be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Cammy

Your endo would be a good source of information for picking the right sets.
I would consult them first.
Our son is 3 and pretty average for height and weight. We tried the Comfort
6mm 90 degree sets when he first started pumping (in his buttocks area) and
they just didn't work for him. I guess he doesn't have enough fat to support
them. The cannula was hitting muscle which caused a burning sensation when
we did a bolus and his numbers were pretty high. As soon as we switched to
the Comfort short sets it all went much smoother.
Are you using Emla or another type of anesthetic cream before site changes?
We use it pretty much all the time with my son. It really helps for site
changes. Sometimes if we have to change his site while he is sleeping we can
get away with no cream, but if he is awake it is a must. Others on the list
have offered great suggestions about making site changes easier. Things like
using an ice cube to numb the area first (if you don't use Emla cream),
using a reward system, distractions, etc.
Good luck.
