RE: [IPp] site changes
Jana,
We are using the Minimed Quick-Set, 6mm infusion sets. Our theory about his
increasing failure rate is that the abdomen area has been overused. Like
Marina, Patrick only has a very small area where he can insert. Anything
outside of that area hits a muscle and kinks/blocks the tubing. The fact
that we can feel some "lumpiness" under the skin, and that he has been using
the same area for over a year, leads us to believe that it is being
overused. We didn't have a problem with the heat and humidity last summer
so I don't think that would cause it.
Recently I got Patrick to agree to try a new area. Frankly he's frustrated
with sites failing prematurely, occasional ketones and having to get up at
night. Plus he knows that with sites failing that he's not keeping his
levels in good control. We're going to do one in the upper buttocks on
Friday night. I'm a bit nervous because I'm not 100% sure where to put it -
I'll check the mail logs for advice. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that
the first one goes in well. You know what they say - you only get one
chance to make a first impression :)
We also got a batch of inset infusion sets that we are going to try soon. I
don't think that will make a difference, but they look easier to use.

Subject: [IPp] site changes
Georg,
I'm glad to know that others are experiencing the same things. My daughter
is
also very lean. She will only use her abdomen for sites. I, too, have been
trying to get her to use other locations, but she won't even consider it.
She
uses the Comfort angled sets and inserts manually. She also only uses a
very
small area on her abdomen on either side of her belly button. She doesn't
have any fat to pinch! What she does manage to pinch when inserting is
pretty
much just skin. She is going to diabetes camp for the first time this
summer
and I'm hoping that she'll find other young ladies who are using different
sites who can help show her or talk her into at least trying another
location.
My daughter has also been having her sites go bad every two days lately. I
haven't figured out what's going on yet. It's very hot and humid where we
live and she's been outdoors a lot every day.
Maybe that could be it.
